Canada has earned a place among the world’s leading nations in the latest 2026 Best Countries rankings released by U.S. News & World Report. The country ranked 19th overall under a newly redesigned global evaluation system focused on statistical performance indicators.

The rankings assessed 100 countries using data related to governance, economy, health, tourism, infrastructure and quality of life.

Canada’s best result came in the Culture & Tourism category, where it ranked 8th worldwide. Strong performances in Governance and Infrastructure also contributed to the country’s overall ranking.

Global Top 10 Countries in 2026

Switzerland secured the number one position globally, followed by Denmark and Sweden. European countries dominated the list, with 18 nations appearing in the top 25 rankings.

Australia ranked 14th overall, while Singapore, Japan and South Korea were the only Asian nations to enter the top 20.

Canada’s Immigration-Friendly Reputation Continues

The report highlighted Canada’s multicultural environment as one of its greatest strengths. The country’s immigration-focused policies, diversity, cultural influence and tourism appeal were major factors behind its strong Culture & Tourism ranking.

Canada remains internationally recognized for welcoming immigrants, international students and skilled workers from around the world.

Detailed Performance Across Categories

Canada’s rankings across major categories included:

CategoryRank
Culture & Tourism8
Governance18

Infrastructure20
Economic Development21
Health27
Civic Health27
Natural Environment63

While Canada performed strongly in governance and economic opportunities, environmental sustainability remained its lowest-scoring area.

New Methodology Changed the Rankings

The 2026 rankings introduced a major shift from previous years. Earlier reports relied on perception-based surveys involving thousands of respondents worldwide. The latest edition instead used statistical data from over 30 international organizations, including the United Nations and the World Bank.

Experts say this explains why Canada dropped from 2nd place in 2023 and 4th place in 2024 to 19th place in 2026.

Canada Still a Top Choice for Immigrants

Even with the ranking changes, Canada continues to be one of the most desirable countries for immigration due to its strong economy, quality healthcare, safe environment and career opportunities.

For many skilled professionals and students, Canada remains one of the best destinations to build a successful future abroad.
